“ ‘Coming Home: The music you love in fresh surroundings’ is the fitting theme for Shreveport Symphony Orchestra’s 2019-2020 Willis-Knighton Masterworks Series,” writes Tiana Kennell in Wednesday’s (9/11) Shreveport Times (Louisiana). In December, “The SSO is preparing to return to its time-honored concert venue, the newly renovated RiverView Theater … Since 2005, [Music Director] Michael Butterman has … introduced contemporary methods to attract and entertain new and returning audiences, challenge the musicians, and further educate concertgoers and the community-at-large on classical music…. Work to the RiverView Theater includes improved handicap accessibility … new seating on the floor level … and more…. The SSO … will purchase a digital projector, a screen, and cameras [which] will allow SSO to incorporate video components during concerts with the purpose of adding more dimensions to the production…. The SSO intends for video projections to become a regular concert feature…. ‘From the New World,’ the final concert of the season, is an artistic retelling of the historic immigrant experience as they entered the United States through Ellis Island.” Butterman recently extended his contract with the Shreveport Symphony through the 2022-23 season. He is also music director of the Boulder Philharmonic and Pennsylvania Philharmonic.
