September 23 is the deadline to apply to participate in the fourth year of the Luna Composition Lab for young female and non-binary composers, based at the Kaufman Center in New York City. Mentor composers in the program are Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid, co-founders of the Lab, plus Reena Esmail, Kristin Kuster, Gity Razaz, and Tamar Muskal. Self-identified female, non-binary, and gender non-conforming young composers from eighth grade through the first years of college may apply. Participants receive one-on-one mentorship and bi-weekly Skype lessons from October to May, performance opportunities, masterclasses, workshops, backstage tours, and networking events in New York City, as well as recordings of their work. Alumni of the program have been commissioned to compose for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Opera Omaha, and members of the Louisville Symphony, and works of the Luna Lab fellows have been recorded by International Contemporary Ensemble.
