South Carolina’s Charleston Symphony will open its 2019-20 season on September 27 with Music Director Ken Lam conducting Under an Indigo Sky by Edward Hart, its composer in residence for the season. The piece, a violin concerto spotlighting Concertmaster Yuriy Bekker as soloist, is part of the orchestra’s “Mozart in the Lowcountry” program at Charleston’s Gaillard Center featuring Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 and George Walker’s Lyric for Strings. The Charleston Symphony gave the premiere of Under an Indigo Sky in 2012. In April, the orchestra and the Shanghai Quartet will perform Hart’s newest work, A Charleston Concerto, marking the official start of the City of Charleston’s 350th-anniversary celebrations. Hart, a Charleston native, is a professor at the College of Charleston and the chair of its music department. Michael Smith is the Charleston Symphony’s executive director.
