Michigan’s Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra has named TYLER RAND as executive director, effective January 1, 2020. Rand will succeed Mary Steffek Blaske, who will retire from the organization in December after 25 years leading the organization. Rand becomes executive director from his current position as the Ann Arbor Symphony’s director of marketing and communications. Rand previously oversaw programming, fundraising, marketing, and community engagement at Classical 90.5 WSMC-FM in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music theory and literature from Southern Adventist University in Tennessee. As an oboist, Rand performed regularly with ensembles including the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, Chattanooga Bach Choir, Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra, Opera Tennessee, and the East Tennessee Symphony Orchestra. He led the East Tennessee Symphony Orchestra as interim conductor during its music director search. Rand serves on the board of directors of Arts Capacity, a Chicago-based nonprofit that brings interactive, dialogue-promoting recitals and new music to prisons.
