CAROLINE KIM has been named principal cello of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra in Michigan. She has been a section cellist with the orchestra since 2016, and as principal cello she succeeds Sarah Cleveland, who had held the position since 1995. Kim recently completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan. After immigrating to Canada from South Korea at the age of eight, Kim she made her North American debut performing in her hometown of Calgary in 2011. She studied at the Juilliard School, earning Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, and has received scholarships, awards, and career development grants. She received a full scholarship at the University of Michigan, and has been awarded fellowships to the Aspen Music Festival and Music Academy of the West. She was principal cellist of the Juilliard Orchestra, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Music Academy of the West, and assistant principal at the Aspen Music Festival. From 2017 to 2019, Kim served on the cello faculty in the University of Michigan’s String Preparatory Academy and Center Stage Strings in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
