The Arapahoe Philharmonic in Littleton, Colorado will perform new works by Zhou Tian and by Brian LaGuardia, a member of the orchestra’s percussion section, on its November 1 “Off the Rails” program, led by Music Director Devin Patrick Hughes. The concert will feature Zhou Tian’s Transcend, a 2019 co-commission with thirteen U.S. orchestras that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and was first performed in April by the Reno Philharmonic. The orchestra will perform the world premiere of LaGuardia’s Rhapsody in Orange, a violin concertino that will feature Concertmaster Tracy LaGuardia, the composer’s mother. Also on the program: Jennifer Higdon’s one-movement Loco, Heitor Villa-Lobos’s “The Little Train of the Caipira” movement from his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2, and Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo with members of the Rocky Mountain Ballet Academy. Look for in-depth coverage of Zhou Tian’s Transcend, and the commissioning consortium behind it, in the next issue of Symphony magazine.
