In Connecticut, Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras has changed its name to Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestras (GCTYO). The Fairfield-based organization, founded in 1961, began as one orchestra and now has ten ensembles. In a press release, GCTYO said the change was made to better reflect its current membership throughout a wider region than just Bridgeport, with participating musicians from more than 30 different towns in Connecticut. The orchestra still maintains a strong presence in Bridgeport, with regular performances at the Klein Memorial Auditorium, plus a youth orchestra and an afterschool program of music lessons. GCTYO also is an educational partner of Project Music, an afterschool music program in Stamford.
