The Greenwich Village Orchestra, based in New York City, is one of more than 80 ensembles worldwide participating in the Beethoven Pastoral Project during the composer’s 250th-birthday year in 2020. The project, which aims to draw attention through music to questions of environmental protection and global sustainability, was launched in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven’s home city, in November 2017 at the UN World Climate Conference. Participating musicians and orchestras are performing Beethoven’s Sixth (“Pastoral”) Symphony on Earth Day (April 22, 2020), United Nations World Environment Day (June 5, 2020), or a day of their choice before June 5, 2020. The Greenwich Village Orchestra performed the “Pastoral” on October 6 at Manhattan’s All Saints Church, led by Music Director Barbara Yahr. Other participating orchestras include Germany’s Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, and WDR Sinfonieorchester; Daegu Symphony Orchestra (S. Korea); West Australian Symphony Orchestra; Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra (Vietnam); Filarmonica della Scala (Italy); and Oslo Philharmonic (Norway).
