Springfield Symphony to perform semi-staged “Oklahoma!” with Missouri State U students

On November 9 and 10, Missouri’s Springfield Symphony Orchestra will perform a new concert version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Oklahoma! at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts at Missouri State University, led by Music Director Kyle Wiley Pickett. Broadway actor and director Robert Westenberg, a professor of musical theater at MSU, will serve as director for the performance, which will feature actors and singers from MSU’s BFA Musical Theatre Program. The semi-staged performance will feature the orchestra and actors together onstage. Kyle Wiley Pickett says, “This project is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. The great Broadway shows of the mid-20th century have some of the best orchestral music by American composers. We rarely get to hear these scores in their full orchestral glory, because theater pits can’t fit the full complement of a symphony orchestra.”
