Ohio’s Canton Symphony Orchestra is launching a fellowship during the 2020-21 season for undergraduates majoring in composition at a Northeast Ohio college or university. The selected fellow will work with CSO conductors and staff throughout the 2020-21 season to create a piece, ten to fifteen minutes in length, to be performed by the Canton Youth Symphony Advanced Orchestra at its May 2021 concert; the fellow will receive a small stipend and mileage reimbursement for rehearsals and the performance. The invitation-only fellowship will be open to undergraduate students majoring in composition. Invitations will be sent to colleges and universities this month, and the 2020-21 CSO Composition Fellowship winner will be announced in May 2021. In a press release, Canton Youth Symphonies Music Director Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz said he is “thrilled to give an undergraduate composer the rare opportunity to write a large orchestral work that will be guaranteed a performance.” Canton Symphony CEO Michelle Mullaly said, “We are fortunate to be in such a music-rich region and we are so excited to be able to offer this opportunity to local students.”
