On January 24 and 25, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra will perform three collaborative Northside Celebration concerts at Ordway Concert Hall in St. Paul and North Community High School in North Minneapolis. It is the SPCO’s second Northside Celebration, following an inaugural event in 2017 that featured music by Jessie Montgomery and William Grant Still. Performers will include actress Greta Oglesby, Courtland Pickens Community Youth Choir, and the Northside Celebration Choir, created for the event. Repertoire will include “The Storm Is Passing Over,” pieces arranged by Sanford Moore, and original spoken-word presentations by Northside students, teachers, and artists. The program marks ten years of partnership for the SPCO with the Capri Theater in North Minneapolis, which presents a three-concert SPCO chamber music series each season and hosts two SPCO programs for families with young children. These concerts are free for Northside residents. The inspiration for the North Celebration was a luncheon five years ago with Northside community residents, representatives from the SPCO, and the Capri at which several themes surfaced, including a desire for opportunities to collaborate, feature local artists, and strengthen relationships in the community.
