“Be in the house for the world premiere of two visually stimulating productions in a night of musically enthralling performances,” writes Tiana Kennell in Wednesday’s (1/29) Shreveport Times (Louisiana). For the Shreveport Symphony’s February 1 concert, “Aleksi Moriarty and Stephen Lias were commissioned to prepare visual components inspired by Circuits by American composer Cindy McTee and Symphony No. 2 by American composer Alan Hovhaness. The result was two different, complementary approaches, said SSO’s music director and concert conductor, Michael Butterman. ‘One is a translation of content, while the other conveys an impression,’ he said…. The visual-meets-auditory presentations are invitations for the audience to dive deeper into the music and form a personal connection…. Video FX artist Aleksi Moriarty’s credits include working for George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic…. Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 2 will pair with a visual presentation by Stephen Lias, a professor of composition.… ‘Lias is an accomplished composer, and the SSO has played his compositions … He is also an avid outdoorsman and photographer who has successfully paired visual images of the natural world with his own music,’ Butterman said.” Also on the program are Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Dominic Muzzi and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.
