In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a year-long, citywide initiative called “Beethoven Rocks” is marking Beethoven’s 250th birthday throughout 2020 with multiple events. The initiative, involving approximately 30 area arts groups, launched on January 16. The Winston-Salem Symphony is presenting multiple events, including a February 12 interactive education concert. On April 5, the Winston-Salem Symphony will perform an all-Beethoven program at University of North Carolina School of the Arts that includes the First Symphony, overture to Fidelio, and the Mass in C with the WSS Symphony Chorus. “This collaboration is a grassroots effort that brings people together who are involved in every aspect of the arts in our community, including music, film, dance and literature,” said Mary Beth Johnson, one of the organizers of the effort and chief operating officer for the Winston-Salem Symphony. Other participating organizations include the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus, Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, Moravian Music Foundation, Music Carolina, Piedmont Opera, RiverRun International Film Festival, Wake Forest University Lifelong Learning Programs, City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department, and Winston-Salem State University. Plans call for at least one event each month of 2020.
