California’s Santa Rosa Symphony has appointed KATE MATWYCHUK manager for its Simply Strings and Summer Music Academy programs. Matwychuk earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Pennsylvania, an AB from Harvard University, and has taught English, creative writing, and critical thinking at schools in Hawaii and Massachusetts. While growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, Matwychuk was an active musician, playing bassoon and participating in a youth orchestra and her school orchestra and band. Inspired by El Sistema, Venezuela’s social-action music network, Santa Rosa Symphony’s Simply Strings program, based at Sheppard Accelerated Elementary School in Roseland, offers children daily ensemble instruction two hours a day, five days a week after school. The orchestra’s Summer Music Academy, held at Sonoma Academy July 13-31, includes instrumental workshops for beginning and continuing students, and performance workshops for more experienced young musicians.
