The North Valley Symphony Orchestra in Arizona will perform music written by women on its March 14 program marking the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, led by Music Director Kevin Kozacek. The concert at Phoenix’s North Canyon High School Performing Arts Center, entitled “Women in Music,” will feature Amy Beach’s “Gaelic” Symphony in E minor (1894); a four-movement suite from Cécile Chaminade’s 1888 ballet Callirhoë; and Joan Tower’s Sixth Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman (2014). The concert will also feature the winner of NVSO’s annual Youth Summerford Violin Concerto Competition. The North Valley Symphony Orchestra organization comprises the NVSO, plus the North Valley Youth Orchestra, an advanced ensemble for musicians 19 or younger; North Valley Youth Strings, an intermediate ensemble; and North Valley Symphonettes, a beginning ensemble of elementary and middle-school students.
