“With the closure of the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center venues, the coronavirus has effectively dropped the curtain on some of San Francisco’s biggest live productions this month,” writes Aidin Vaziri in Saturday’s (3/7) San Francisco Chronicle. “San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced on Friday, March 6, that War Memorial and Performing Arts Center venues, including the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, will be closed for all public events for the next two weeks over the fears of the rapid spread of COVID-19—the illness caused by the new coronavirus. All San Francisco Symphony concerts scheduled at Davies through March 20 are canceled, including performances by Michael Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble on Sunday, March 8; Michael Tilson Thomas and Gautier Capuçon on Thursday-Sunday, March 12-14; the Youth Orchestra on March 15; and Sir James Galway on March 17. The orchestra … said it still plans to move forward with its upcoming tour of Carnegie Hall and Europe [but] ‘is monitoring the situation in Europe very carefully, and, at this time, there is no alteration to the tour performances schedule though the situation on the ground is evolving on a daily basis,’ the organization said in a statement.”
