KidzNotes, a nonprofit that provides free instruments and music lessons to children in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro, North Carolina, has canceled all live, public performances through the end of April and announced plans to add distance-learning for Kidznotes students during the coronavirus epidemic. The remote-learning program is set to launch on March 23, with content being modeled on those of other El Sistema music education organizations around the country. The program will allow students to continue to study music and allow teaching artists and on-site staff to continue working and getting paid. In announcing the changes, Kidznotes Board Chair KC Ramsay said, “We are working with these district and school leaders to make sure every child in our communities has food. We are also working with El Sistema programs across the country to engage in best practice solutions for remote musical learning…. We will need creativity and compassion as the next weeks and months unfold. Stay connected with Kidznotes on social media. Call us. Figure out how to video chat. (If I did it, you can!) Pick up an instrument. Play it. Sing. Write. Draw.”
