“ ‘We knew San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s next music director would need to have a rare combination of qualities,’ said San Francisco President David Stull,” writes Janos Gereben in Tuesday’s (4/14) San Francisco Classical Voice. “ ‘After a two-year search, we have found this leader in Edwin Outwater.’ Outwater succeeds Eric Dudley, who became the music director of San Francisco Contemporary Music Players…. Outwater is the San Francisco Symphony’s former resident conductor (2001–2006) and San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra music director…. He later also served as SFS director of summer concerts … and … had a key role in the SoundBox concert series…. He continues an active role as the Music Director Laureate of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in Ontario. [At San Francisco Conservatory] besides conducting and teaching, he envisions ‘a role in shaping the musical direction of the place as a whole and connecting the various large ensembles even more.’ … His best musical memories, according to Outwater, involve education and learning.… In addition to conducting the orchestra and selecting its personnel” Outwater will curate the contemporary music division, work on large-scale projects with the opera and historical performance departments, coach students, select artistic/academic themes for each year, and teach seminars.
