With concert-hall performances banned during the coronavirus pandemic, the New York Philharmonic has launched a two-week digital festival entitled Mahler’s New York, from April 16 to 30. The festival, spotlighting the composer/conductor who was the orchestra’s music director from 1909 to 1911, will feature an all-day Mahler Grooves celebration on April 23. There will be seven video broadcasts of New York Philharmonic performances, audio of all of Mahler’s symphonies, an archival exhibit, a virtual walking tour, downloadable recipes, and education materials. Philharmonic musicians will appear in video introductions to each of the ten symphonies and in performances from their homes. Content is being released over the course of the two weeks at the New York Philharmonic website. The festival began on April 16 with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1; videos include Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts “Who Is Gustav Mahler?” and “A Toast to Vienna in 3/4 Time”; and the online festival will conclude on April 30 with Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony No. 2.
