On May 3 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET, Bang on a Can, the New York City-based new-music organization, will stream 26 live performances from musicians’ homes in New York City and around the country at marathon2020.bangonacan.org. The Bang on a Can Marathon will begin with a performance by Meredith Monk and conclude with pianist Vicky Chow’s performance of John Adams’s China Gates. Flutist Claire Chase will perform Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint; other performers will include violinist Vijay Iyer, cellist Maya Beiser, and flutist/composer Nathalie Joachim. The six-hour live marathon will be hosted by Bang on a Can co-founders and artistic directors Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. There will be four commissioned world premieres by Dai Wei, Shara Nova, Molly Joyce, and Ken Thomson. Guest composers will introduce their works online. The marathon will be free to stream, and all performers and commissioned composers are being compensated by Bang on a Can. In addition, Bang on a Can is digitizing and archiving 33 years of its archived recordings, videos, posters, and program books, and on May 1 will release them in a new digital archive called CANLAND.
