The Vermont Youth Orchestra Association has named MARK ALPIZAR to the position of music director, effective July 1, 2020. A Southern California native, Alpizar is a conductor, clarinetist, and music educator. He is currently the assistant conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and on the instrumental faculty at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. Previously, Alpizar was the assistant conductor of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, and American Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was music director of the Four Seasons Youth Orchestra in Orange County, California, for seven seasons, where he commissioned over a dozen new works, toured internationally, and conducted side-by-side performances with the Dana Point Symphony. Alpizar received a doctor of musical arts degree from Arizona State University. He holds a master’s degree and bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Long Beach’s Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, whose conducting faculty he joined in 2019.
