On May 27 at 7 p.m. ET, the Kaufman Music Center in New York City will live-stream a recital by cellist Gabriel Cabezas, in his home, performing mostly contemporary works. Cabezas’s online presentation will be directed (via Zoom) by James Darrah, whose opera stage directing credits include Ellen Reid’s prism, Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves and Proving Up, and Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain. The free livestream at Kaufman’s Facebook page will feature Jessie Montgomery’s Prelude, Alyssa Weinberg’s Pieces of Light, Gabriella Smith’s Lost Coast, Nico Muhly’s Drones and Viola da Gamba, and J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008. Montgomery’s piece is part of a larger work-in-progress being composed for Cabezas. Weinberg’s Pieces of Light is inspired by artist James Turrell’s installation at Mass MoCA, Into the Light. Muhly’s work is part of a cycle of works he is writing for drones and solo instruments.
