On May 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra will host a live watch party at its website featuring Concertmaster David Southorn performing a mini-recital and speaking with Music Director Alasdair Neale. The event is part of the orchestra’s “NHSO At Home” live-streamed series on Thursdays; videos are then archived at the orchestra’s YouTube page. The next online event is set for June 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET: a mini-recital featuring vocalist Joan Ellison and a conversation with Principal Pops Conductor Chelsea Tipton. Among those previously featured in the series are Assistant Principal Clarinet Bixby Kennedy performing Paul Harvey’s Etudes on Themes of Gershwin; and Assistant Concertmaster Artemis Simerson and her son, Darian, performing Darian’s composition Nocturne. Darian Simerson is a participant in the NHSO Young Composer Program. In addition, the NHSO’s education department is hosting a songwriting competition, with contestants invited to submit entries through June 20. The winning song will be orchestrated by composer Bert Dovo, and the new work will be performed by the New Haven Symphony as a tribute to front-line workers on the orchestra’s first concert next season. Visit the NHSO’s education page for details about the contest.
