North Carolina’s Charlotte Symphony Orchestra is launching a virtual concert series featuring a different ensemble of Charlotte Symphony musicians each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The free series, entitled “Charlotte Symphony al Fresco,” will be hosted by Principal Cellist Alan Black from his backyard, streamed live on Facebook and YouTube; content will be archived and available on demand afterward. The first concert, on June 10, will feature Black and CSO harpist Andrea Mumm performing works by Bach, Vaughan Williams, Arvo Pärt, and Saint-Saëns. Concerts on June 17, 24, July 1, 8, and 15 will feature Black and flutists Victor Wang and Amy Orsinger; oboist Hollis Ulaky; clarinetist Sam Sparrow; bassoonist Olivia Oh; French Hornist Robert Rydel; violinists Monica Boboc, Kirsten Swanson, Jenny Topilow, Lenora Leggatt, and Joseph Meyer; violist Kirsten Swanson; cellists Sarah Markle and Jeremy Lamb; and bassists Jeff Ferdon and Taddes Korris. Says Alan Black, “When COVID-19 shut down the world I immediately thought that this was an opportunity for me to use [my yard] with two goals in mind: to provide live intimate performances to our community, and to give CSO musicians, and my friends, the chance to play together again in a safe way.”
