On July 7, the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, based in Sandusky, Ohio, launched its new “FSO Tunes for Tuesday Tour,” through which orchestra musicians perform at senior living facilities in the area. Beyond offering the now-rare opportunity for musicians to perform before a live audience, the initiative was conceived as a way for musicians to earn income while complying with the state’s Responsible RestartOhio guidelines. The orchestra’s March concert sponsors—Erie County Community Foundation, The Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation, and Stefano Dental—allowed the Firelands Symphony to transfer their underwriting to the new performances. Musicians perform outside senior living facilities in the Firelands area; residents and staff listen from indoors. Each of the performances features a different small-ensemble orchestra. The first performance on July 7 featured the Firelands Diamond Brass Quintet; concerts on July 21, 28, and August 11 will feature, respectively, Firelands String Quartet, High Frequency Flute Quartet, and Samba Joia Percussion Ensemble. “We are so excited about this opportunity to provide live music to senior citizens in the Firelands community while offering our musicians a chance to perform and receive compensation when it is needed most,” said FSO Executive Director Tricia Applegate.
