“The Akron Symphony Orchestra has a unique answer to the question of how to proceed during the coronavirus pandemic: change the venue,” writes Zachary Lewis in Tuesday’s (7/14) Plain Dealer (Cleveland, OH). “Instead of E.J. Thomas Hall, their usual home, various subsets of the ASO next season will spend the year making free, surprise appearances at sites all around Greater Akron…. They’re calling it their ‘Interlude’ season…. The season originally planned for this year … has been pushed forward in its entirety to 2021-22. The ‘Interlude’ season, said music director Christopher Wilkins, ‘gives us the chance to do a great many things we’ve always wanted to do … to utilize [our musicians’] skills in an extraordinary variety of ways.’… The current list of ‘Interlude’ concert hosts includes the Akron Art Museum, the Akron Zoo, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, Akron Public Schools, and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, among many others…. A small handful of professional ASO musicians will appear without advance notice and perform in the background while guests and employees go about their normal activities. The idea, executive director Paul Jarrett said, is to offer music but not to attract large crowds…. ‘We could pop up anywhere,’ he said.”
