The New York Youth Symphony and the New Jersey Youth Symphony are co-hosting six weeks of free webinars from July 15 to August 12. The one-hour conversations on Wednesdays, entitled the Artist Stories Series, focus on the importance of equity, inclusion, and representation in classical music, jazz, and Broadway. The sessions also cover navigating a professional music career; attendees are encouraged to submit questions in advance, to be answered during a Q&A portion of each session. The series launched on July 8 with oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz, an original member of Imani Winds, as guest speaker, followed by violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins on July 15. Featured in coming weeks will be French horn player and Oberlin Conservatory faculty member Jeff Scott (July 22), singer and actor Carmen Ruby Floyd (July 29), trumpeter Sean C. Jones, chair of jazz at John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute (August 5), and Weston Sprott, trombonist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and dean of the Preparatory Division at The Juilliard School (August 12).
