The concert tour company Classical Movements, based in Alexandria, Virginia, will present eighteen intimate, socially-distanced concerts and recitals from late July through early October at the Secret Garden of the Rectory, Classical Movements’ home in Old Town Alexandria. The “Sounds of Hope and Harmony” series of one-hour Saturday concerts will launch on July 25 with string musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra performing music by Beethoven, Bartok, Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Barrière, Joplin, and others. In addition to chamber performances by members of the National Symphony Orchestra, the series will also include opera, jazz, and choral music. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra will perform in the series (October 3 and 4), and tenor Issachah Savage and pianist Joy Schreier will perform arias and songs on August 15. On September 12, a program entitled “400 years of choral music by Byrd, Britten, Panufnik, Coleridge-Taylor, Barnett and more on themes of hope in times of uncertainty,” will feature the Choir of Hope & Harmony conducted by Anthony Blake Clark, music director of Baltimore Choral Arts. Programs will showcase repertoire by Black and women composers, as well as works by Beethoven to mark the composer’s 250th birthday year.
