“The Des Moines Symphony on Monday canceled its Yankee Doodle Pops and Water Works Pops concerts scheduled for Labor Day weekend because of COVID-19 health concerns,” writes Sierra A. Porter in Tuesday’s (7/21) Des Moines Register (Iowa). “Yankee Doodle Pops, originally scheduled for July 2 at the state Capitol, was postponed to Sept. 7 because of coronavirus concerns. It was to be held at Lauridsen Amphitheater Water Works Park and was to honor Labor Day heroes, health care workers and first-responders. The second season of the Water Works Park concert series was set for July 24-26 and was pushed back to Sept.5. ‘After much deliberation, we have come to the conclusion that we cannot reliably ensure safety of our audiences or our musicians onstage at Water Works Park without making major changes to our planned programming which would severely diminish the musical impact of these concerts,’ said executive director Richard Early…. Yankee Doodle Pops will return to the Capitol next year on Friday, July 2. The Des Moines Symphony’s 2021 Water Works Pops concert series will be announced at a later date.”
