The New York Philharmonic has launched a 30-day practice challenge from August 1 to 30 that aims to provide a sense of community among musicians who have been isolated due to COVID-19. Entitled “Practice 30,” the challenge also is designed to reinforce the importance of all music-making, support better practice habits, and advocate for the continuing importance of music education in schools. Throughout the month, the New York Philharmonic’s YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram pages are presenting videos featuring Philharmonic musicians as well as guest artists offering practice tips and encouragement. Guest artists include pianist Aaron Diehl, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and pipa player Wu Man, all of whom have appeared as soloists with the Philharmonic; others include R&B artist/composer/pianist Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), drag queen and musician Thorgy Thor, violist and influencer Drew Forde (@ThatViolaKid), violinist Jennifer Koh, composer and conductor Eric Whitacre, and brass quintet Canadian Brass. Musicians of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to share some or all of their practice over 30 days on social media using the hashtag #Practice30. New York Philharmonic musicians and Thorgy Thor have created a trailer for “Practice 30,” which can be viewed on YouTube.
