“The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra announced today it will create a new position on its management team as part of a broader initiative to address diversity and inclusion,” writes Bill Cieslewicz in Friday’s (8/14) Cincinnati Business Courier. “The CSO on Friday unveiled a 10-point Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Action Plan. At the core of the plan is the creation of its first chief diversity and inclusion officer. The CSO will be the first major American orchestra to have a chief diversity and inclusion officer, President Jonathan Martin said…. ‘The creation of an executive-level Chief Diversity Officer places the Cincinnati Symphony at the leading edge of change in the orchestra field,’ Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, said in a release…. The new CDIO will report to Martin and lead a department focused on community engagement and diversity. The plan also calls for the creation of a Community Advisory Council to strengthen the orchestra’s ties with the community. Additionally, the CSO will: implement implicit bias training for orchestra, board and staff; review hiring and compensation policies and practices within the CSO to ensure fairness and equity; and increase mentorship opportunities to develop future arts leaders of color.”
