“The Milwaukee Symphony will replace its previously announced 2020-21 season with a schedule of 16 different online concerts for subscribers beginning in January,” writes Jim Higgins in Monday’s (8/24) Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “COVID-19 safety protocols are not the only factor behind the decision. ‘On May 18, the Bradley Symphony Center, which was set to be completed in September 2020, sustained significant flood damage in the basement following an intense rainstorm and steam tunnel failure,’ the MSO said…. Under the new virtual season plan, the MSO will video orchestra members performing on the new Bradley Symphony Center stage, making that video available live and on demand for subscribers. The symphony plans 12 classical concerts and 4 Pops programs…. Symphony President and CEO Mark Niehaus says Music Director Ken-David Masur will draw from his experience of a decade of programming the Chelsea Music Festival, which presented many creative concerts featuring small ensembles…. The MSO is not planning to have the entire orchestra and chorus performing together onstage for live audiences until September 2021. But ‘what we’ve learned in COVID is expect the unexpected, and be flexible and get ready to change what you thought you were going to do,’ Niehaus said.”
