Ohio’s ProMusica Chamber Orchestra heads outdoors with scaled-down, in-person concerts

“ProMusica Chamber Orchestra has announced a new summer concert series, SummerFEST, marking the earliest in-person shows scheduled by a major central Ohio performing arts organization since pandemic-related restrictions went into place,” writes Peter Tonguette in Friday’s (8/21) Columbus Dispatch (Ohio). “The small- and medium-sized concerts will take place at outdoor sites throughout central Ohio from Aug. 30 through Sept. 11. The seven shows will feature a maximum of 15 ProMusica musicians, including those traveling from out of state.… Music Director David Danzmayr said the group couldn’t bring itself to shut down indefinitely in the face of the pandemic…. The orchestra … was accustomed to presenting outdoors concerts each August … and its roster of 37 musicians could be collapsed into smaller groupings. It is, after all, a chamber orchestra…. The heart of the festival will be a total of five concerts at Headley Park in Gahanna (three) and Coffman Park in Dublin (two)—locations chosen after an extensive search for venues that could safely accommodate musicians and audiences, CEO Janet Chen said. She said the venues could be reused for as-yet unannounced fall concerts if indoor theaters remain shuttered. All events will allow for social distancing among audience members.”
