The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Washington State will open its 2020-21 season with a live-streamed concert on September 26 at Skyview Concert Hall, conducted by Ken Selden, music director of the Portland State University Orchestra. There will be no in-person audience, in accordance with state guidelines. The concert will feature Vivaldi’s Concerto Alla Rustica, George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, Elgar’s Serenade, Vaughan Williams’s Five Variants of “Dives and Lazarus,” William Grant Still’s Serenade, and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony Op. 110a (arr. Barshai). Oregon Public Broadcasting President and CEO Steve Bass will serve as emcee, and there will be a pre-concert show featuring local podcast producer Ashley Hall and VSO Principal Trombone Greg Scholl. The performance and pre-concert show will be rebroadcast on September 27 at 2:30pm. All current season ticketholders will receive an email link to the live-stream; single tickets to view the live-stream are also being sold. “We are thrilled to be able to perform again after a nearly seven-month pause,” said VSO Executive Director Igor Shakhman. “Throughout history, music has proven to be a powerful antidote to anxiety, fear, and depression. Right now our audience needs us more than ever. And we are here to serve our community and beyond.”
