The Chicago Sinfonietta will open its 2020-21 season on October 17 with a virtual concert entitled “Common Ground: Collective Stories” featuring works ranging from Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man to the commissioned world premiere of Portrait of a Peaceful Warrior by Kathryn Bostic, the orchestra’s artist in residence. Bostic’s work is the first of the Chicago Sinfonietta’s three commissions by African American composers this season. Also on the program will be Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango in an arrangement for woodwind quintet by Jeffrey L. Briggs; the Andante Moderato movement from Florence Price’s String Quartet in G Major; movements from Beethoven’s “Pathetique” Piano Sonata, arranged for string orchestra; Enoch Mankayi’s Sontoga, arranged by Valerie Coleman; and “N’Kosi Sikeleli’ iAfrika,” the South African national anthem. Ticket buyers to the virtual concert will receive an access link to the concert one week prior to the concert, and the concert will be available for a 24-hour period. “Common Ground is the perfect place to begin our 33rd season,” says Music Director Mei-Ann Chen. “Community is this concert’s theme, and what better way to connect than through music from the past and present, and new arrangements of well-known and not as well-known, intimate chamber works?”
