“The Fall River Symphony Orchestra’s 96th season, held entirely virtual, will highlight composers of African descent starting with the Classical/Early Composers concert on Sunday featuring work by Vicente Lusitano (who was also Portuguese) and Ignatius Sancho,” writes Linda Murphy in Saturday’s (11/28) Herald News (Fall River, MA). “ ‘I really want to take this opportunity to represent under-represented music. And this is something we’ve been doing with the FRSO over the last six seasons,’ said music director Douglas McRay Daniels…. ‘This season in particular is going to be a dive into a part of the repertoire that’s really been overlooked.’ … There will be two winter concerts performed by small select groups of FRSO musicians. On Feb. 21 at 3 p.m., the Classical and Romantic Composers of African Descent concert will feature works by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, George Bridgetower, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. On March 7, at 3 p.m., American and New England Composers of African Descent from the Late 1800s/1900s will highlight works by Blind Tom, Scott Joplin, William Grant Still, Florence Prince, and Margaret Bonds. The spring presentation on May 16 will feature … prominent African American composers who will talk about their work as they play them.”
