South Carolina’s Charleston Symphony Orchestra has launched a partnership with Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health to provide COVID-19 testing and safety oversight for its 2020-21 season. In addition to providing guidance and safety protocols for rehearsals and performances, MUSC is organizing and administering SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic testing for more than 70 musicians and event staff before every CSO concert. As part of the new partnership, CSO ensembles performed on December 10 and 11 for MUSC Health staff and patients at various sites throughout the hospital campus, including the main university hospital lobby, Ashley River Tower Annex, and Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital cafeteria area. The Charleston Symphony has been performing concerts for reduced audiences at the Gaillard Center, with fewer than 360 patrons in the hall per concert; the orchestra’s concerts are also streamed.
