BMOP/sound, the in-house record label of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, has released Norman Dello Joio’s The Triumph of Saint Joan Symphony and The Trial at Rouen opera in a two-CD set featuring BMOP and Odyssey Opera, with soprano Heather Buck as Joan of Arc. Also out from BMOP are John Harbison: Concertos for String Instruments featuring three string concertos composed between 1988 and 2009, and Charles Wuorinen’s opera Haroun and the Sea of Stories. The Calidore String Quartet—violinists Jeffrey Myers and Ryan Meehan, violist Jeremy Berry, and cellist Estelle Choi—has released Babel, an album of quartets by Robert Schumann, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Caroline Shaw, on the Signum Classics label. The Handel and Haydn Society has released Haydn Masses Vol. 2, featuring the “Lord Nelson” Mass plus the composer’s “London” and “Military” symphonies, led by Artistic Director Harry Christophers and recorded live on January 24 and 26, 2020. The Kansas City Symphony’s performances of Jonathan Leshnoff’s Third Symphony and Piano Concerto have been released on Reference Recordings, also featuring pianist Joyce Yang. The Miami Beach-based Nu Deco Ensemble has released Nu Deco Ensemble + Cimafunk: Live in Miami, an EP featuring the orchestra and AfroCubanFunk artist Cimafunk performing funk, Afrobeat, and orchestral sounds. Nu Deco Ensemble’s co-founders are conductor Jacomo Bairos and composer/producer Sam Hyken. The Portland Youth Philharmonic has released its first digital album, featuring music by Portland-based composer Tomáš Svoboda, on the streaming service Primephonic. The Seattle Symphony has released Scriabin’s The Poem of Ecstasy and Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra on its in-house record label; performances were conducted by Music Director Thomas Dausgaard and recorded in Benaroya Hall in September 2019.
