WILLIAM POWERS has been appointed executive director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO), effective on January 11, 2021. He will succeed Craig Johnson, who retires at the end of December after twenty years at the helm of PYSO. Powers is currently managing director of Pittsburgh Opera, where he has worked for fourteen seasons. He was previously administrative director of the Juilliard School’s Department of Vocal Arts and the Juilliard Opera Center, and associate administrator of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He has held posts as general director of the Berkshire Opera Company, production manager at the Music Academy of the West, and administrator of the Aspen Opera Theater Center. He has adjudicated auditions for the Metropolitan Opera National Council and served on the board of directors of OPERA America. Powers holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Hamilton College and an MBA in finance from Fordham University Graduate School of Business Administration. He is an alumnus of the Juilliard School’s Professional Intern Program.
