The Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra in Massachusetts has created the Jeannette Clemons Chair for Principal Oboe, named in honor of Jeannette Clemons, a Lowell Philharmonic oboist, personnel manager, and board member who died in December 2020 after a longtime battle with leukemia. The orchestra is creating a fund to endow the Jeannette Clemons Chair. In addition to playing oboe, Clemons was a professional flutist who served for nearly 30 years in the U.S. Navy Band, where she was one of the first women musicians. She held a medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, and worked for many years as a child and adolescent psychiatrist before retiring in 2015. She is survived by her husband, Peter, a bassoonist in the Lowell Philharmonic, and four siblings. The Lowell Philharmonic is a community orchestra founded in 1903; Thomas Kociela is music director.
