Music Director Jader Bignamini leads the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a digital concert streamed from Orchestra Hall, December 2020.

“The Detroit Symphony Orchestra sounded a note of optimism Thursday as it unveiled the classical and pops schedules for its 2021-2022 season,” writes Brian McCollum in Thursday’s (2/11) Detroit Free Press. “Like much of the arts and events world, the DSO is tentatively eyeing autumn for the return of live audiences…. The DSO did announce it will deploy electronic ticketing, contactless entry points and other health and disinfection protocols when the public is back. In addition, ultraviolet sanitizers have been installed in the venue’s ventilation system…. Audiences have been absent from Orchestra Hall since March…. The newly announced season is marked by new pieces—including four world premieres—and more than 20 works composed by women and people of color…. It will be the first full season at the DSO for music director Jader Bignamini…. [Bignamini] made his formal DSO debut in December, conducting a scaled-down, socially distanced orchestra in Beethoven’s ‘Eroica,’ and is scheduled to conduct four programs this spring, ahead of the 2021-22 season. [Wynton] Marsalis … in March 2022 [will join] his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for ‘Swing Symphony.’ … Music director laureate Leonard Slatkin will conduct … world premieres of works by Samuel Adler and Joseph Schwantner.”
