“Like many performing arts organizations, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra has been offering digital content during the pandemic,” writes Eric Meyer in Friday’s 92/26) St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO). “The orchestra has launched a virtual series featuring concerts filmed at Powell Hall …. using a new system of robotic cameras…. The idea had been part of the SLSO’s long-term plan to increase accessibility and to extend its reach to new audiences globally…. ‘The amount of time we spend on media now has at least tripled,’ says Erik Finley, vice president and general manager for the orchestra, says. ‘I see this focus on media as a priority going forward, as part of our life as a 21st-century orchestra.’ ” Upcoming concerts feature a mix of standard repertoire by Strauss, Dvořák, and Mendelssohn and music by contemporary composers including Takashi Yoshimatsu, Jessie Montgomery, and Gabriela Lena Frank. “The digital offerings are here to stay, though not at the expense of live performances, SLSO president and CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard says. When in-person concerts resume, ‘the live experience is going to feed into how the media portfolio will evolve and take shape. These will very much live in tandem,’ says Bernard.”
