On March 10, the Vanderbilt Blair School of Music and the National Museum of African American Music will host a virtual book launch and panel discussion of musicologist Douglas Shadle’s Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony, published in February by Oxford University Press. The book argues that Dvořák’s symphony raised new questions about a “national” style of music, and about the place of African American music within the broader musical culture of the United States. The livestream will be viewable at 7 p.m. CT from the Vanderbilt Blair School of Music live-streaming page. Panelists for the program will include Shadle, musicologist Steven Lewis, and music journalist Anne Midgette, former classical music critic at The Washington Post.
