The Rock Island County Health Department and the Quad City Symphony Orchestra are collaborating to bring live music to the mass vaccination site at the Camden Centre in Milan, Illinois, the orchestra announced. The “Vaccine Variations” initiative arranges for one-hour performances by individual QCSO musicians from April 14 to May 20 in the patient observation area of the vaccination clinic. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the performances will feature string musicians only; musicians will be masked and socially distanced. As a thank you for their decision to vaccinate, patients will receive a discount code for upcoming QCSO performances. The first performance, on April 14, will feature QCSO violinist Sabrina Tabby; bassist Julia Kankaras will conclude the series on May 20. “We have given up so much of what makes life joyful because of the pandemic,” said Janet Hill, chief operating officer of the Rock Island County Health Department. “We are elated that the Quad City Symphony Orchestra will share their world-class musicians with us as Quad Citians take control of the pandemic by getting vaccinated.” In its announcement, the QCSO said the initiative was inspired by Yo-Yo Ma’s recent impromptu performance at a COVID-19 vaccination site in Massachusetts.
