The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Washington State will perform its next live-streamed concerts on April 24 and 25, featuring a reduced-size orchestra led by guest conductor Ken Selden. Repertoire will include Sibelius’s Andante Festivo, Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings in E major, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with pianist Orli Shaham. The concerts will be live-streamed from Vancouver’s Skyview Concert Hall and hosted by Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Steve Bass. The April 24 broadcast will include a pre-concert discussion with VSO Podcast host Ashley Johnson and VSO trombonist Greg Scholl, and intermission will feature interviews. The performance and pre-show on Sunday, April 25 will also be streamed live. Two physicians on the VSO board of directors—Dr. Michael Liu and Dr. David Smith—helped to develop the safety protocols for the musicians in coordination with the Washington Health Department. Ken Selden has conducted several VSO concerts during the pandemic, substituting for Music Director Salvador Brotons, who is expected to lead the orchestra’s May 22-23 concerts.
