“The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops season next year will celebrate … a post-pandemic return of the full orchestra and the reopening of Music Hall to full capacity,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Monday’s (6/7) Cincinnati Business Courier. “CSO opening weekend is Oct. 29-30…. The orchestra will offer digitally streamed concerts, too…. Music director Louis Langrée … will open the season with a program … featuring Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 [which] uses a musical motto ‘F-A-F,’ meaning ‘frei aber froh’—‘free but happy,’ symbolizing, Langrée said, our ‘return to life together.’ At the Cincinnati Pops, conductor John Morris Russell will celebrate his 10th anniversary in 2021-22. Pops principal guest conductor Damon Gupton will lead a tribute to John Williams honoring the composer’s 90th birthday…. Langrée will lead eight of the 10 commissioned works that the orchestra will premiere next season. Those include Sebastian Currier’s ‘Track 8,’ … a new work by Kinds of Kings, a U.S.-based collective of composers [and] a new orchestral fanfare by jazz great Wynton Marsalis, a CSO co-commission.” Also scheduled is new music by Missy Mazzoli, Mark Simpson, CSO Creative Partner Matthias Pintscher, Guillaume Connesson, Julia Adolphe, and Gabriela Ortiz.
