“Music director Louis Langrée will not renew his contract with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra when it expires at the end of the 2023-24 season,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Wednesday’s (6/16) Cincinnati Business Courier. “He began his tenure as music director in 2013…. The French conductor arrived during the year that the orchestra had to vacate its historic home in Music Hall while it underwent an extensive revitalization…. His accomplishments have included groundbreaking programming, such as A Pelléas Trilogy, the re-creation of Beethoven’s legendary Akademie 1808 concert, and a Concertos for Orchestra project. His programs honoring the CSO’s pioneering legacy created for the orchestra’s 125th-anniversary season were abbreviated by the shutdown caused by Covid in March 2020. Another initiative included a Fanfare Project, which was a series of 20 commissions that were performed digitally during the pandemic. Langrée was also a catalyst for the CSO’s return to the stage in the fall of 2020…. Between the start of his tenure and the conclusion of the CSO’s upcoming 2021-22 season, Langrée and the CSO will have commissioned or co-commissioned 36 new orchestral works…. Langrée … plans to return as a guest conductor after his tenure concludes.”
