Evansville Philharmonic to launch 2021-22 season with world premiere, “River City Re-Awakened”

“The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, in its second season under Music Director Roger Kalia, has announced the performances for the upcoming season,” writes Abbey Doyle in Friday’s (6/18) Evansville Courier and Press (IN). In the Classics Series, “American Visionaries opens the season with River City Re-Awakened, a world premiere, especially for the EPO written by Paul Dooley, [plus] Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein’s … West Side Story and Gershwin’s … Rhapsody in Blue featuring pianist Fei-Fei Dong…. [October] brings the intoxicating, whirling Ascending Bird, co-written by American composer Colin Jacobsen and Persian composer Siamak Aghaei…. The Pops Series … will include film music, tributes to larger-than-life icons of the past and holiday traditions…. [In March], ‘Maestro of The Movies: Celebrating 90 Years with John Williams’ brings [music] from” many of the films that Williams scored. The season also includes a new series of bourbon tastings and music at Dusty Barn Distillery, Evansville Country Club, and Farm 57; fall and spring performances by the Evansville Youth Orchestras at the Victory Theatre; two performances of Handel’s Messiah in December; and Puccini’s Turandot, led by Alfred Savia, the orchestra’s music director from 1989 to 2020.
