“Chicago Opera Theater has announced three mainstage productions, making up its showcase 2021-22 season,” writes Chris Jones in Tuesday’s (6/22) Chicago Tribune. They include “a concert-style staging of Georges Bizet’s ‘Carmen,’ starring Jamie Barton in the title role opposite Stephanie Blythe in the tenor role of Don José … the Chicago premiere of the contemporary holiday opera ‘Becoming Santa Claus,’ with music and libretto by Mark Adamo … [and] ‘Quamino’s Map,’ with music by the Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen and libretto by Deborah Brevoort. This opera following the London life of a formerly enslaved man will be staged on April 23, 29 and May 1, 2022. Finally, as part of its Vanguard developmental series … COT will stage one March 4, 2022 concert-style performance ‘The Beekeeper,’ with music by Wang Lu and a libretto by Kelley Rourke. The season was announced Tuesday by COT music director Lidiya Yankovskaya and general director Ashley Magnus.”
