Boston’s New England Conservatory will partner with Silkroad, the touring ensemble and social-impact organization, for a virtual 2021 Global Musician Workshop from August 8 to 14. The workshop will be directed by cellist and Silkroad artist Mike Block and feature faculty that includes members of the Silkroad Ensemble and their colleagues representing various cultures, traditions, and musical styles. Participants will engage in classes and group sessions in Zoom webinars (not open to the public), including play-along jams, panel discussions, and topic-based elective classes. The event will also include online performances on August 13 and 14 showcasing participants, faculty, alumni, and special guests. Performances—broadcast for free on Silkroad’s Facebook and YouTube pages—will feature singer-songwriter and Silkroad Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens, Beninese-American singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo, hip hop duo Black Violin, composer and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro, and musician and rapper Speech. Faculty for the webinars includes Kinan Azmeh (clarinet/composition), Mike Block (cello), Maeve Gilchrist (Celtic harp and voice), Balla Kouyaté (Malian balafon), Hankus Netsky (Klezmer multi-instrumentalist), Marcus Printup (American jazz trumpet),Edward Pérez (bass and Latin rhythms), Kala Ramnath (Indian Hindustani violin), Shane Shanahan (multi-style percussion), and Wu Man (Chinese pipa).
